Oath of Athens
- We, the health professionals who are working in prison
settings, meeting in Athens on 10, September, 1997 hereby
pledge, in keeping with the spirit of the Oath of Hippocrates,
that we shall endeavor to provide the best possible health
care, for those who are incarcerated in prisons for whatever
reasons, without prejudice and within our respective professional
ethics. We recognize the right of our incarcerated individuals
to receive the best possible health care. We undertake:
- To abstain
from authorizing or approving any physical punishment.
- To abstain
from participating in any form go torture
- Not to engage
in any form of human experimentation amongst incarcerated
individuals without their informed consent
- To respect
the confidentiality of information obtained in the course
of our professional relationship with incarcerated patients.
- That our
medical judgment be based on the needs of our patients
and take priority over any non-medical matters.
The International
Council of Prison Medical Services was founded in 1977.
Two years later its code was embodied in the Oath of Athens,
which all members are pledged to support (ICPMS, 1979).

prisoners fit for labor, punishment or transfer; and providing
expert opinion for the courts pronouncing upon whether a
