Polczyk-Przbyla,
M.& Gournay, K. (1999). Psychiatric |
nursing
in prison: The state of the art? Journal of Advanced
Nursing, 30(4), 893-900. Retrieved December
12, 2002, from Academic Search Premier database:
http://search.epnet.com/direct.asp?an=5866941&db=aph
- Note:
Psychiatric nursing in prisons has received
criticism from within and outside the profession
in recent years. In England and Wales this amongst
other issues has prompted a review of forensic
health care by the United Kingdom Central Council
for Nursing, Midwifery & Health Visiting (UKCC).
The status of forensic psychiatric nursing
as a specialty has al so been disputed in the literature
and the role of nurses working in this field is
seen by some to be more about social control than
caring.

professional
nursing. Nursing Outlook, 31 (2), 115-118.
- Note
the social and religious pressures influencing the
beginnings of prison health care in England. As
you read about the notable early prison reformers

A "cruel and unusual" punishment. Hastings
Centre Report, 9 (10), 7-10.
- Note
the historical reference to the influence of the

de Haan,
F., & van Drenth. A. (2001). Elizabeth Fry. The |
Rise
of Caring Power. Retrieved July 1, 2002 from
the Elizabeth Fry Website. http://www.elizabethfry.net/
- Note
the brief biography of Elizabeth Fry.
- Note
this original study discusses the role of women
in developing and dispersing caring power, and,
vice versa, the role of caring power in constituting
'women' as modern social subjects - processes which
began around 1800.
- Note
the concept of caring power is based on the historian/philosopher
Foucault's concept of pastoral power, but
takes into account the vital role played by gender.
