Frequently Asked Questions for Students
We realize this is an anxious time for you with so much uncertainty. We want to assure you that we are focusing on keeping you safe and well, while also minimizing impact on academic programs. We are receiving many questions and have provided some FAQs below to help provide clarity in this changing environment. There is no requirement for you to remain in Calgary, however your courses will require you to engage with learning materials, activities and assignments, so please ensure you will have access to reliable wi-fi and consider any time differences if classes are to be held at the regular scheduled times. Also, if your home is overseas please consider the health risks and travel restrictions in your home location when making your decision.
We are encouraging all students in residence that have the ability to go home to do so no later than Sunday, March 29. We understand this will not be an option for everybody and we will continue to accommodate any students that cannot go home, including international students. We will be working with students in the coming days to begin transitioning all students who remain in residence to buildings without shared bathroom facilities. More details on this plan will be coming shortly.
Your instructor should have been in touch with you about the revised format for delivery of your classes and by Friday, March 20th you should receive revised course outlines for completion of your courses.
We have suspended requirements for students to provide evidence for reasons for absences so please do not attend medical clinics for medical notes or Commissioners for Oaths for statutory declarations. Please let your instructor know immediately if you are ill and cannot meet the deadlines specified.
Our systems are quite reliable but we understand your concern. Just to make sure, always use your @ucalgary email, take a screenshot of the confirmation of upload to D2L and/or the sent notice in your email box just in case. Please alert your instructor should you notice any discrepancies.
Once you receive the revised course outlines, please review delivery methods and assessments to determine whether your accommodations need to be updated. If revisions are required, please liaise with your advisor in Student Accessibility Services.
Some students will simply not be in a position to complete their course work and may wish to withdraw from their course(s). The deadline to withdraw is April 15. While there will be no tuition refund for withdrawals, we encourage students who are considering this option to first speak to their instructors or academic advisors to seek solutions that might best support them.
Students should work remotely and not come to campus. Contact your supervisor to develop a work plan that you can carry out remotely.
Some university research will be designated as critical, and will be allowed to continue on campus. This designation must be requested by your supervisor. For more information on critical research, see the COVID-19 Response: Guidelines for Researchers page

Students, Faculty and staff should work remotely and not come to campus.
GATs will play a key role in supporting the transition to online/remote delivery of coursework.
- Taylor Family Digital Library will close effective Sunday, March 22.Check here for opportunities to access library support remotely
- Vendors on campus in MacEwan Student Centre and Yamnuska Hall, are being directed to close effective Sunday, March 22. The Landing will remain open for students in residence.
- Computer labs: All computer labs on campus will shut down starting Monday (March 23) morning at 8:30 a.m.
- Student Wellness Services and Student Accessibility Services: Services will only be available online going forward.
- Coursework: We would like to encourage students who might have difficulty completing coursework due to the closure of the Taylor Family Digital Library and computer labs to discuss options with their course instructors.
On March 22, UCalgary has made the decision to offer students the choice, for each course they complete in the Winter 2020 term, to either accept their final course grade or opt for Completed Requirements (CR)/Fail (F). Students will make this choice after they complete their Winter 2020 courses and receive their final grades. Learn more.
There should be no delays in you being awarded your degree on the basis of the move to alternate delivery this term.
To help limit the spread of COVID-19, the June 2020 convocation ceremonies have been postponed until fall 2020. The new dates will be made available by early May.

The grad photography studio is temporarily closed until further notice. All April appointments have been cancelled.
You will be able to schedule future appointments once in-person activities resume on campus. If there are any questions for please contact the studio on their online support team directly through live chat or email email@example.com.
All credit courses offered in the upcoming 2020 Spring and Summer terms will be delivered remotely. In light of the projections for the progression of COVID-19 in Alberta in the upcoming weeks and months, we want to provide certainty for our students and academic staff as they prepare for the these sessions. This decision will provide our instructors with as much time as possible to design and transition courses for remote teaching and learning in order to enable a high-quality student experience.
A number of undergraduate students have asked us if summer research experiences such as the Program for Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE) will be affected as a result of COVID-19. We are actively looking at preserving as many research experiences for our undergraduate students under this program as possible, while being consistent with the steps being taken to limit the impact of COVID-19. We realize that this program provides financial support for our undergraduate students, and are confirming that PURE will not be cancelled. We will provide more clarity on the revised nature of this program as soon as possible.
Other award programs that provide rich research experiences for our students are undergoing similar reviews. Decisions related to those programs will be communicated once reviews are completed. We will also be examining situations where an individual researcher has an informal arrangement with students (outside PURE or an external agency). If you are considering such an arrangement, please connect with the VPR’s office.
The Government of Canada has clarified exemptions to the travel restrictions for international travellers seeking to enter Canada that were announced on March 16 and took effect on March 18. These exemptions now include international students on a valid study permit. Learn more.
Fines associated with books that have been recalled and not returned before the library closed will be waived.
In addition, most materials that students have checked out are on term loans. If these materials have not been returned, the term loans will all be automatically extended at the end of term so that no fines are incurred.
We recommend that you update your personal information in your student centre. It is important for us to have updated home address, contact telephone numbers and emergency contacts. We also recommend that you keep up to date with wellness advice from Alberta Health Services (www.albertahealthservices.ca/topics/Page16997.aspx) and the University of Calgary COVID-19 website (https://ucalgary.ca/risk/emergency-management/plans-procedures/covid-19-response).
Textbooks will be available to order online through the UCalgary Bookstore, with free shipping within Canada for the spring/summer term. Digital options will be available in some cases, subject to availability and what instructors have chosen. The rental and bookloan programs will also be open during the spring/summer term.
