Deferral of Undergraduate Admission Request

Deferral of admission requests are considered on a case-by-case basis relating to exceptional circumstances* only and approval is not guaranteed.

Decisions will be communicated in writing 1-3 weeks after submission to the address provided on this form.

*exceptional circumstances are unforeseen and extraordinary situations that are typically of a short-term nature and have a clear and definitive end date.

Admission to all programs at the University of Calgary are competitive. The admission average required to secure an offer of admission is determined once the qualifications of the applicant pool have been assessed for each faculty/program; therefore, enrolment is limited to the number of students that can be accommodated by the resources available to maintain an acceptable quality of education.

Due to the limited number of spaces available each year, deferrals of admission can only be supported for exceptional cases as it reduces the number of seats available for the next year.

Please note admission terms are defined as follows:

Fall – September start
Winter – January start
Spring – May start
Summer – July start

In most cases, we require supporting documentation prior to reviewing.

You're encouraged to submit documentation that will support your situation. Supporting documentation will depend on the reason noted in your circumstances. This could be medical documentation, proof of visa application denial, proof of visa application submission — to name a few. The decision to provide supporting documentation that best suits the situation is at your, the student's, discretion.

One file only.
100 MB limit.
Allowed types: txt, rtf, pdf, doc, docx, odt, ppt, pptx, odp, xls, xlsx, ods.

Please note:

  • Requests to defer an offer of admission are not normally considered after the start of the admission term.
  • Deferral of admission requests are not typically approved for financial reasons.
  • Denial of request to defer admission is not grounds for an admission deposit refund.
  • If approved, students are not permitted to study elsewhere during the deferral period. Doing so will cancel the deferral and students will be required to reapply.
