English for Academic Purposes Program (EAP)
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program is a comprehensive intensive program designed to prepare academically qualified students whose native language is not English for the purpose of admission to the University's degree or diploma programs. The EAP program is for prospective international, Permanent Resident or Canadian students whose level of English language proficiency (ELP) is at a high-intermediate to low-advanced level of fluency. This program is not designed for beginners. Academically qualified students can apply for admission to: 1. the combined EAP + Undergraduate Degree program or 2. students who miss the application deadline for EAP + Undergraduate Degree and who need ELP to apply for admission to a degree program at a future date have the option of enrolling in EAPP courses as Open Studies students. Upon entry to the program all students are required to participate in the EAP Program's Language Assessment activities. The assessment results determine a student's placement into either the core three tier EAP Program or, for those who do not meet minimum requirements for admission to EAP, into the Preparation for the EAP Program (PREP). The PREP program is a two tier intensive bridging program that prepares students for entry into the EAP Program. Effective with a September 2009 application for admission: 1. In order to be considered for admission, EAP + Undergraduate Degree applicants will need to submit minimum scores in one of the following: (a) Internet based TOEFL (iBT) - 70; or (b) Computer based TOEFL (CBT) - 193; or (c) Paper based TOEFL (PBT) - 523; or (d) IELTS - 5.5; or (e) CAEL - 50 Admitted students whose placement test results indicate placement below EAP Tier 1 will have their admission to the degree rescinded and may choose to begin working on their goal to achieve ELP in the PREP Courses as Open Studies students. 2. Open Studies applicants may apply to study without these minimum scores. While studying as Open Studies students, students can apply for a future admission to a degree program. Results from placement testing will place both types of applicants into appropriate Tier courses of the program. |
Program Structure | Click here to view the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program Chart One term (four months) is required to complete each tier of EAPP and PREP EAP Program Policies
|
Language Assessment Activities | At the beginning of each term, newly admitted students are given language assessment activities. After language assessments results are verified, students are placed into the appropriate EAP or PREP tier. Each tier consists of 13 weeks (approximately 260 hours) of classroom instruction, including formative and summative assessments. Students who place into EAP tier 1 courses normally take one year to complete the program. All EAP and PREP courses in each tier are corequisites and must be taken as a group; however, students who do not successfully complete any component of EAP tier 3 will be required to complete the unsuccessful component only. Successful completion of all courses in EAP tier 3 waives the English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirement for admission into all undergraduate programs except for the Faculty of Education's Bachelor of Education program. Applicants to the Faculty of Nursing must also present a satisfactory score on the MELAB Speaking test or the Test of Spoken English (TSE) in addition to successful completion of EAP tier 3. Please refer to the English Language Proficiency information provided in the Admission portion of the Academic Regulations section or consult the following web site for details: http://www.ucalgary.ca/admissions/admission_requirements/elp.html EAPP courses may not be used for credit toward a degree or diploma program; however, EAP tier 3 students are permitted to take one University credit course per term while enrolled in the program with the approval of the EAP Coordinator. One term (four months) is required to complete each tier. Applications for Admission to the EAP + Undergraduate Degree program will be accepted for the Fall term only. EAP courses are offered during Fall, Winter, and the combined Spring/Summer Sessions and Open Studies students can be admitted to EAP course at the beginning of any term. |
EAP Program Fees Policies | Mandatory Language Assessment Fee: Newly admitted students are required to participate in Language Assessment activities in order to determine placement in the program and will be required to pay a $250 CDN non-refundable Language Assessment Fee. Tuition Fees All international students holding Study Permits pay 100% differential fees for EAPP and PREP courses. Regardless of the category under which a student registers, no waiver of fees will be made. Students cannot audit EAPP courses. Class sizes are limited to 25 students per section; however, some courses are taught in a blended group environment conducive to inquiry-based learning. |
Continuation Requirement | All EAP Tier 1 and 2 and PREP Tier 1 and 2 students who achieve a grade of "C" or better in all corequisite courses of the tier will be permitted to advance to the next tier. Students who achieve a grade of "C-" or lower in one or more co requisite course of any tier will be required to repeat and successfully complete all courses of the tier before advancing to the next tier. All students are permitted to take co-requisite tier courses twice. After two unsuccessful attempts to complete co-requisite tier courses, the student must retake the EAP Program language assessment with payment of the $250 CDN fee which will indicate appropriate tier placement for the student. |
Program Exit Requirements | EAP tier 3 students who successfully complete all EAP tier 3 courses with a grade of 'C' or better, will meet the proficiency requirement for admission into all undergraduate programs* except for the Faculty of Education's Bachelor of Education program. Applicants to the Faculty of Nursing must also present a satisfactory score on the MELAB Speaking test or the Test of Spoken English (TSE) in addition to successful completion of EAP tier 3. Please refer to the English Language Proficiency information provided in the Admission portion of the Academic Regulations section or consult the following web site for details: http://www.ucalgary.ca/admissions/admission_requirements/elp.html. Students who achieve a grade of 'B+' or higher in EAP 190 (tier 3), Academic Writing, will additionally meet the Effective Writing requirement of the University of Calgary. Students who are unsuccessful in achieving a minimal grade of 'C' in any tier 3 course must repeat only the unsuccessful courses for a grade of 'C' or better. Students repeating courses will not have the original grade removed from the transcript of record. The transcript of record will indicate both the original grade and the repeated courses with the final grades in the session(s) in which they were taken. Appeals of grades in EAP courses will be heard by a special committee. *The EAP Program may not be used to meet the ELP for admission to the Faculty of Education's Bachelor of Education program. *Successful completion of EAP tier 3 courses meets the ELP requirement for the Haskayne School of Business and the Faculty of Nursing. Open Studies EAP tier 3 students applying for Undergraduate programs in these Faculties must present verification of successful completion of EAP tier 3 courses by appropriate deadline dates. Admitted EAP + Undergraduate Degree students who wish to change their degree program to these two faculties must present verification of successful completion of EAP tier 3 courses by appropriate deadline dates. |
EAP + Undergraduate Degree | EAP students enrolled in University undergraduate degree/diploma programs: Admission into regular university courses requires the successful completion of EAP tier 3. EAP + Undergraduate Degree students enrolled in EAP tier 3 may pre-register for credit courses offered in the next term. If a student does not complete EAP tier 3 successfully or meet the University's ELP requirement, his/her registration in credit courses in the next term will be cancelled. In exceptional circumstances, the EAP Director will make recommendations to the Dean of the student's home faculty to extend the time required to complete the EAP program beyond the twelve months provided for completion. All EAP + Undergraduate Degree students must meet the University's Effective Writing Requirement within twelve months from the beginning of the session of the student's initial registration in a credit course. Students who achieve a grade of B+ in the Writing component, EAPP 190, of the tier 3 courses will satisfy the Effective Writing Requirement. Applications for Admission to the EAP + Undergraduate Degree will be accepted for the Fall Session only. EAP + Undergraduate Degree students are advised that grades for EAP courses are not used in the calculation of yearly grade point averages for the purposes of the official transcript of record nor cumulative and continuous grade point averages determined by the faculties. These students are also advised that faculty requirements for continuation in a degree/diploma program are significantly different than that for the EAP program. Students must refer to the appropriate sections of this Calendar for specific promotion and graduation requirements. |
EAP Only | EAP students not enrolled in University undergraduate degree/diploma programs: EAP students may register as Open Studies students to study in the EAP Only program. Students registered in EAP tier 3 are, however, permitted to register in one credit course per session with approval of the EAP Coordinator. If students are also interested in seeking admission to a degree/diploma program at the University, they must complete an Application for Admission to that program by the appropriate deadline (see Applications for Admission Schedule in this Calendar) in addition to submitting all required documentation in support of their application. Successful completion of EAP tier 3 can be used to satisfy the English Language Arts 30-1 requirement for admission purposes. Completion of this requirement is valid only for U of C programs and applicants must meet the deadline dates for admission to a degree/diploma program. The University of Calgary will accept Open Studies applications for Admission to EAP Only for Fall (September), Winter (January), and the combined Spring/Summer terms. Note: Completion of the EAP program does not guarantee admission to a degree or diploma program. |
Withdrawal from EAP Courses | The last day to withdraw with permission from EAP courses will be the last day of lectures in the session. Students will receive a 'W' designation on their U of C transcript. |
