1. Degrees and Specializations Offered

The University offers an interdisciplinary specialization in Performance Studies to students registered in an existing graduate program. The student will receive the degree offered by the home program.

Master of (Arts/Fine Arts/Science)

Doctor of Philosophy

Specialization: Performance Studies (Interdisciplinary)

2. Admission Requirements

In addition to Faculty of Graduate Studies requirements, the Performance Studies program requires:

Master's Degree

a)an undergraduate degree with a minimum grade point average of 3.3 on a four-point scale

b)a statement of intent

c)for applicants required to provide proof of proficiency in English, a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (written test), 250 (computer-based), or 100 (internet-based)

d)a sample of critical writing (10-20 pages)

Doctor of Philosophy

a)a Master's degree (in exceptional circumstances, a student may be admitted to a doctoral program on the basis of a Bachelor's degree)

b)a statement of intent

c)for applicants required to provide proof of proficiency in English, a minimum TOEFL score of 600 (written test), 250 (computer-based), or 100 (internet-based)

d)a sample of critical writing (10-20 pages)

3. Application Deadline

The deadline for the submission of complete applications is 10 January for September admission.

4. Advanced Credit

Application for credit for courses completed outside the program must be made to the Program Director at the time of admission.

5. Program/Course Requirements

In addition to the Faculty requirements, the Program requires:

Master's Program

A minimum of three full-course equivalents, including the following:

a)PFST 601 - Introduction to Performance Studies, which must be taken in the first semester of the program

b)PFST 603 - Performance Theory

c)Two half-courses to be selected from an approved list of core courses in Performance Studies

d)Two optional half-courses to be chosen in consultation with the Program Director

Doctor of Philosophy

A minimum of three full-course equivalents beyond the Master's degree, including the following:

a)PFST 701 - Proseminar in Performance Studies and PFST 703 - Advanced Performance Theory. Students entering without a Master's degree in Performance Studies may be required to take PFST 601 - Introduction to Performance Studies and PFST 603 - Performance Theory

b)Two half-courses to be selected from an approved list of core courses in Performance Studies

c)Two optional half-courses to be chosen in consultation with the Program Director

6. Additional Requirements

A second language or special disciplinary expertise may be required for certain research projects.

7. Credit for Undergraduate Courses

Credit may be granted for one full-course equivalent at the undergraduate level with the approval of the Program Director.

8. Time Limit

Expected completion time is two years for the Master's degree and four years for the Doctor of Philosophy degree. Maximum completion time is four years for the Master's degree and six years for the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

9. Supervisory Assignments

Upon admission to the program, students are assigned an interim advisor to give them time to familiarize themselves with faculty members' research before securing a permanent supervisor. Master's thesis examination committees and doctoral supervisory committees must include members from more than one academic unit.

Master's Degree

By the end of the eighth month of the first year in program, each student must submit a proposed field of research and the name of a proposed supervisor to the Performance Studies Executive Committee for approval.

Doctor of Philosophy

By the end of the eighth month of the first year in program, each student must submit a brief statement of the proposed field of research, the names of the proposed supervisor and supervisory committee members, and an initial thesis proposal to the Performance Studies Executive Committee for approval.

10. Required Examinations

Final thesis oral examinations are closed with no public presentation.

Doctoral Candidacy Examinations

The candidacy examination will normally be completed 18 to 24 months (but not later than 28 months) after the student's initial registration in the doctoral program. The candidacy examination will consist of written and oral components, which must be completed within a 30-day period.

The written component of the candidacy examination will be set by the candidate's supervisory committee and will consist of two parts, one on a set reading list in the field of Performance Studies and the other in a special field that will normally be relevant to the thesis project. The student may take the written portion of the examination in one of the following ways:

Option 1: Sit-Down Examination

Sit-down examinations normally consist of two papers, written in two separate sittings of three hours each over a five-day period.

Option 2: Take-Home Examination

Take-home examinations normally consist of two papers, written at home, ranging from 3500 to 4000 words each, the topics for which may be collected from the Program Office three weeks before their due date.

11. Research Proposal Requirements

Master's Degree

No later than eight months after initial registration, each student must submit a thesis proposal to the Performance Studies Executive Committee. Further details are available from the Program Director.

Doctor of Philosophy

No later than six months after the completion of the candidacy examination, each student must submit an outline of the thesis, a critical bibliography, and a research project (normally, a thesis chapter) to the supervisory committee and meet with the supervisory committee to discuss this submission no sooner than three weeks after it has been submitted.

The thesis outline, bibliography, research project, and discussion with the supervisory committee will normally be completed 24-30 months after initial registration in the doctoral program. In any event, the candidacy examination and the additional program requirement of the thesis outline, bibliography, research project, and discussion with the supervisory committee must be completed no later than 36 months after initial registration in the doctoral program.

12. Special Registration Information

Students must register for courses by the end of June. Course selection must be approved by the Program Director.

13. Financial Assistance

Full-time students may be eligible for financial assistance. For information on awards, see the Awards and Financial Assistance section of this calendar. There is no financial assistance available for part-time students.
