English Language Proficiency

All applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency for purposes of admission in one of the following ways:

(a) successful completion of at least three years of formal, full-time study (not less than three courses per semester) at an English secondary or post-secondary institution in an English-speaking country which the University of Calgary recognizes as English language proficiency exempt; or

(b) graduation from a degree program offered by an accredited university in a country which the University of Calgary recognizes as English language proficiency exempt; or

(c) a mark of 75% or better on the Alberta English Language Arts 30-1 diploma examination (not the blended grade) OR a mark of 80% or equivalent letter grade or better in Alberta English Language Arts 30-1 (blended mark) or equivalent course from other Canadian provinces.

Applicants may also satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirements by presenting one of the following:

1 Applicants to the Faculty of Nursing must present two distinct requirements: the TOEFL iBT/computer-based/paper-based test (or CAEL, IELTS, or MELAB) in addition to presenting a satisfactory score on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or the MELAB Speaking Test.

2 A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)and a minimum score of 5.0 on the Test of Written English (TWE) is also acceptable (except for the Faculty of Nursing or the Faculty of Education).

3 Applicants to the Faculty of Education's Bachelor of Education must present a minimum total score of 100 on the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) as well as minimum score of 27 on the speaking and listening components.

4 Applicants to the Faculties of Law, Graduate Studies, Medicine (excluding applicants to the Bachelor of Health Sciences) or Veterinary Medicine should check English Language Proficiency requirements directly with those faculties.

5 Applicants to the Faculty of Education's Bachelor of Education must present two distinct requirements: the TOEFL iBT/computer-based/paper-based test (or MELAB) in addition to presenting a satisfactory score on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) or the MELAB Speaking Test.

No student will be admitted unless this requirement has first been satisfied.

Please note: Applicants must satisfy two separate and distinct English Language requirements for admission to the University of Calgary:

1. The English subject acceptable in lieu of Alberta English Language Arts 30-1

AND

2. The English Language Proficiency requirement.

Note: Disabled students should contact the University of Calgary Disability Resource Centre for information regarding alternative methods of evaluating the English proficiency of individuals who cannot take tests under standard conditions.

*The MELAB Speaking Test with a score of 3+ will be accepted in lieu of the TSE.

No student will be admitted unless this requirement has first been satisfied.

The IELTS is administered by the British Council offices outside Canada and the United States. For further information about the test, please refer to their website at www.ielts.org.
