Established to acknowledge the contributions of the chancellors of the University of Calgary, the Chancellor’s Graduate Medal celebrates excellence in academic achievement at the graduate studies level. This year’s recipient is Braedon McDonald.

McDonald will graduate from the MD/PhD Leaders in Medicine Program. He is a recipient of the Dr. Lionel E. McLeod Research Scholarship from Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions, and has been a fixture in the laboratory of CIHR Health Researcher of the Year Paul Kubes, PhD, where his research has focused on immune response and inflammation.

News of the award was an unexpected surprise for McDonald, and he is quick to acknowledge the recognition isn’t a result of individual achievement.

“It’s a reflection of the excellent education that I have received in the immunology and Leaders in Medicine programs, and the support that I received in the Kubes lab,” says McDonald.

He gratefully acknowledges the guidance and mentorship from Kubes, and thanks him for the opportunity to work with such a talented group of researchers.

The Governor General Academic Medal was first awarded in 1873, and has since become one of the most prestigious awards that a student in a Canadian educational institution may receive. With this award, the Governor General of Canada continues the tradition of encouraging outstanding scholarship across the nation.

“With all the great work being done by graduate students in the Department of Community Health Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine, I was speechless when I learned that my work was singled out for the gold medal,” says Pendharkar.

Making it particularly special, he notes, is that the medal will be presented by the Governor General himself.

Pendharkar, who studies health-care operations research, attributes this recognition to the guidance and mentorship provided by his supervisory committee and, in particular, his co-supervisors Diane Bischak and Dr. Tom Noseworthy. He also adds that he could not have completed his master’s degree without the unwavering support of his family, especially his wife Medini.
