Students' Union launches holiday food drive

With the holidays fast approaching, the University of Calgary Students' Union is working to ensure student families in need have access to the right supports.

The Students' Union's Volunteer Services (SUVS) today launched its annual holiday food drive. The campaign is a competition among the approximate 210 SU sanctioned clubs to collect the most points based on donations in order to win a prize.

On Nov. 19 and 20, various clubs will have tables set up throughout the MacEwan Student Centre to receive food and monetary donations to benefit both the SUVS Food Bank and the Inter Faith Food Bank. Members of the campus community are invited to donate at these tables and in turn, ensure no one goes hungry this holiday season.

"We are very happy to once again lead a campus-wide initiative to ensure everyone has a happy holiday season," said Alastair MacKinnon, SU VP External. "This initiative is a great example of the positive impact we can have on our community when we work together."

Coinciding with the annual food drive, the SUVS is also offering supports to student families through its annual Adopt-A-Student-Family program.

Each year, the SUVS invites members of the campus community including departments to adopt a student family during the holiday season to provide gift hampers for children. Members of the campus community are invited to come together and apply to sponsor a student family. For applications and details, interested groups can email Volunteer Services at
