Alumni, staff elected to Parliament

By James Stevenson

University of Calgary President Elizabeth Cannon offered her congratulations to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and other alumni and staff who will be representatives of Canada’s new federal government.

Prime Minister Harper, the Member of Parliament for Calgary Southwest, is a two-time alumnus of the university. He received his Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1985 and his Master of Arts, also in economics, in 1991. Diane Ablonczy, Member of Parliament for Calgary Nose Hill, was re-appointed as Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas and Consular Affairs). Ablonczy is also a two-time alumna, earning a Bachelor of Education in 1973 and Bachelor of Laws in 1980.

Other University of Calgary alumni who were elected to Parliament in the May 2 election include:

  • Rob Anders, Member of Parliament for Calgary West BA’94;
  • Blake Richards, Member of Parliament for Wildrose BA’00.
Michelle Rempel, a university employee in the field of research administration, was also elected in the riding of Calgary Centre-North.

“We take great pride in the successes and accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, and 140,000 alumni,” said Cannon. “We congratulate the MPs elected this month who are alumni and staff of the University of Calgary, and look forward to working with them on issues that matter to Albertans and all Canadians.”
