Six players from the five-time defending Hardy Cup champion University of Calgary Dinos have been named to the World Team roster for the 2013 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) International Bowl.

Led by Canada West rookie of the year Brett Blaszko (receiver), the Dinos will also be represented by running back Mercer Timmis, offensive linemen Sean McEwen and Jordan Filippelli, linebacker Tanner Doll and defensive back Michael Schmidt.

Football Canada announced a total of 26 Canadian players who will play for the World Team at the annual competition, slated for Feb. 5 in Austin, Texas. Doll and McEwen are returning players for the World side, which defeated the USA 35-29 in the game last year — the first time Team USA had been defeated in IFAF competition.

“It’s a tremendous honour for these players,” said Dinos head coach Blake Nill.

“It’s an experience that we try to always have our kids get the opportunity to have and take advantage of. From a football perspective, it’s another opportunity to compete in a game situation. If you look at a guy like (Jordan) Filippelli, who didn’t play for us this year, but will be required to next year, it just gets him jump-started and gets his motivation going,” says Nill.

Fourteen of the Canadian players also represented Canada at the 2012 IFAF U-19 world championship, including the Dinos trio of Doll, McEwen and Timmis.

The Dinos captured an unprecedented fifth consecutive Canada West football championship in 2012 and are four-time Vanier Cup champions. Ten Dinos alumni were active on Canadian Football League rosters in 2012, and 108 Dinos have been drafted into the CFL — including 14 since 2009.
