University of Calgary

Copyright Licence

UToday HomeApril 30, 2012

Dear Members of the University Community:

As many of you are aware, on April 16, 2012, the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) and Access Copyright announced they have negotiated a model licence agreement that will allow universities to reproduce copyright-protected materials in both print and digital formats.

A number of you have written to me to express your concerns. At this point, no decision has been made as to whether University of Calgary will sign on to the agreement or opt out. As part of our review and consultation process, we intend to hold a town hall for the campus community on this issue the week of May 7th. Details on this town hall will be released as soon as they are available.

I chair the University of Calgary Copyright Committee and this committee has been working overtime to examine the model agreement in detail. We are also consulting with academic and administrative staff across the university, the SU and GSA, and hope to consult with TUCFA next week. We have until May 15th to make a decision, and then until June 30th to confirm our decision.

If you would like to express your thoughts about this model licence agreement, I invite you to attend the town hall we will be holding the week of May 7th.

Thank you,
Dru Marshall
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
