"In Calgary, we quickly associate the term ‘energy’ with the energy industry. But we know that the reality is much broader than that,” says Rahim Sajan, curator of TEDxCalgary. “Energy: Full Spectrum gives us the ability to cross many frontiers and disciplines when we think about how energy surrounds us in all its various forms: creatively as a basis for theatre and the arts, literally in terms of how we think about the future scope of our energy use and production, and structurally in terms of how we can harness energetic human ideas to make changes in our society.”

TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. TEDx Calgary is operated under licence from TED and is part of the global movement that has taken the world by storm.

"Through the Eyes High vision, the University of Calgary is committed to deepening our engagement with our community,” says deputy provost Benedikt Hallgrimsson. “TEDxCalgary offers a great opportunity to further this commitment by hosting an exciting community-based intellectual forum. This is a great example of how we can serve as an intellectual hub, not just for our students, staff and faculty members, but for the broader Calgary community."

The May 11 event will have more than 13 speakers and performers, in addition to curated TEDTalk video content that is connected to the theme. “The program is intentionally diverse to replicate the multidisciplinary approach that participants value so highly,” says Sajan.

Four speakers are from the University of Calgary:

  • Peter Tertzakian, adjunct professor, Haskayne School of Business and ISEEE Research Fellow;
  • Lynn McIntyre, professor, Faculty of Medicine;
  • John Brown, associate dean (research), Faculty of Environmental Design;
  • Steve Larter, Canada Research Chair in Petroleum Geology.

Additional speakers are available through the event page on the TEDxCalgary site.

“The University of Calgary is a great location and host for the event,” says Sajan. “This is a world-class institution, and we need to celebrate the intellectual energy and the ideas that it brings to our community. We are celebrating the deep reservoir of knowledge and insight that resides in the university with four speakers coming from here.”

TEDxCalgary is open to the public, but is limited to only 100 participants. Tickets are $50, with options for student discounts ($25). Interested participants are encouraged to submit an application as soon as possible, as the event sells out quickly.
