U of C captures raft of CASE awards

University of Calgary communicators earned several awards at the recent Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VIII competition.

CASE District VIII encompasses post-secondary institutions from across the western provinces in addition to U.S. states in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Organizations who participate in these competitions include the universities of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Portland, Brigham Young, Washington and Oregon State.

Winning entries include:

Grand Gold: Photography and Illustration; Series of Illustrations—To Colleen Turner and Matthew Fox from External Relations for a series of illustrations by Calgary artist Pierre Lamielle that appeared in U magazine. The illustrations accompanied a feature article highlighting the university’s global activities. (See

Silver: Websites; Website Special Feature—To Adam Zakreski and Colleen Turner from External Relations for UNOW TV, a website feature that uses streamed video to highlight student activities, news events and research endeavours at the U of C. (See

Silver: Writing; Individual Feature or Article/Institution with enrolment over 15,000—To Beth Frank, Matthew Fox and Colleen Turner for a column written by U magazine regular Mark Hopkins, BA’05. (See

Bronze: Periodicals; External Audience Magazines/Institution with enrolment over 15,000—To Colleen Turner and Matthew Fox for U magazine, the University of Calgary’s alumni and community magazine. The magazine is produced by External Relations and the University of Calgary’s Alumni Association. (See news/uofcpublications/umagazine).

Bronze: Visual Design; Multi-Page Print Design—To Kim Gordey and Morghan Elliot from Student Enrolment Services for the University of Calgary 2009 Viewbook. The Viewbook is a prime recruitment tool. (See
