University of Calgary receives $9.9M for ElevateIP Alberta Program

Participating startups are now eligible for up to $100,000 in funding

Calgary, AB – ElevateIP Alberta (delivered on behalf of the University of Calgary) is a Recipient of Innovation Science and Economic Development Canada’s ElevateIP program. ElevateIP helps Business Accelerators and Incubators provide the tools Canadian startups need to understand, strategically manage and leverage their IP. Securing legal protection for creations and innovations is crucial for long-term business success, but it can be complex. Many startups lack sufficient resources, funds, and expertise to develop and implement a strong IP strategy.

“Innovation and entrepreneurship are key elements driving the Canadian economy, and Canadian businesses that are able to leverage and use their Intellectual Property strategically are more likely to be innovative and experience high growth. With our $9.9 million contribution to the University of Calgary through the ElevateIP program, our government is helping Alberta startups leverage their intellectual property, providing a strategic advantage that helps create the foundations for long-term success.”

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry

ElevateIP Alberta is delivered on behalf of the University of Calgary, in partnership by Innovate Calgary and Economic Development Lethbridge. The program aims to support more than 2,500 startups in Alberta by offering comprehensive IP support. This involves fostering an in-depth understanding of IP through collaborations with business accelerators and incubators and extending financial assistance to facilitate the development and execution of effective IP strategies for these startups.

“The impact of research lies in translating discoveries into tangible societal advantages. The ElevateIP initiative enriches the already robust and extensive support system for students and faculty with an entrepreneurial drive. Connecting with the diverse network of innovators and startups from across the province creates more opportunities for impact – together, Albertans do incredible things.”

William Ghali, Vice-President (Research) of the University of Calgary

ElevateIP Alberta is wrapping up a highly successful pilot program that garnered tremendous interest with over 175 applications pouring in from diverse sectors. These applications span across a spectrum of industries including life and health sciences, clean tech, agriculture, and digital media, showcasing the broad appeal and relevance of the initiative. "ElevateIP Alberta is gearing up to launch the full program in early 2024. This upcoming launch follows a successful pilot phase, crucial in conducting extensive research, identifying key gaps, and shaping the program accordingly. Protecting intellectual property is pivotal to a startup’s success – it safeguards innovation, secures competitive advantage, attracts investment, and ensures the uniqueness vital for market recognition and growth."
