UCalgary’s mental health webinar supports students, faculty and staff return to campus

Anxiety and depression rising with return to in-person work

Calgary, AB – Nearly 30 per cent of Canadians are reporting moderate to severe anxiety about returning to pre-pandemic routines.* To support return-to-work and campus this fall, the University of Calgary’s Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning and the Campus Mental Health Strategy are hosting a webinar to discuss mental health topics and address the emotions, thoughts and feelings around returning to workplaces and post-secondary campuses in the fall. The webinar closes out the annual Summer Wellness Series, which previously featured events discussing teaching and learning with a trauma-informed lens, and diversity in mental health on post-secondary campuses.

The three main drivers of anxiety and stress are lack of predictability, lack of controllability and salience. COVID-19 does not provide much control or predictability, so it’s not too surprising people are stressed and anxious. This workshop will remind people about the mental health risks of COVID-19, provide some tools to reflect on your current functions and recommend strategies for coping.
