UCalgary named among the top employers in Alberta for 2021

University has been recognized for the eighth straight year

Calgary, AB – The University of Calgary has been recognized as one of Alberta’s top 70 employers for the eighth straight year. The annual ranking, compiled by publisher MediaCorp Canada Inc., recognizes employers across the province that are leading in their respective industries in offering “exceptional places to work.”

The university was selected for this award, in part, because of the faculty and staff supports created early on in the COVID-19 pandemic. These included: clear protocols for a safe and healthy work environment, COVID-19 information bulletins, training and interactive workshops on working from home, flexible schedules and a COVID-19 Community Support website.

“The UCalgary community has weathered the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic because of our workplace culture of resilience. Our faculty and staff have worked together to pivot quickly and continue our outstanding teaching, learning, and research during difficult times. These university champions don’t hesitate to step up in support of each other, and that speaks volumes about our sense of community.”

- Dr. Ed McCauley, PhD, president and vice-chancellor, University of Calgary

In addition to its COVID-19 response, the university was recognized as an exceptional place to work due to its Campus Mental Health Strategy, a dedicated UFlourish Week in support of good mental health, and 24-hour access to mental health consultants for faculty and staff. This comprehensive suite of supports earned UCalgary a 2021 Mental Health at Work Gold Level Certification from Excellence Canada in recognition of outstanding policies, strategies, practices and results in workplace mental health.

A variety of professional development opportunities, a defined benefit pension plan and retirement planning assistance were also key considerations in this ranking.
