UCalgary to commemorate National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day with cross-campus events

Calgary, AB – To commemorate the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools, the Government of Canada has declared Thursday, September 30 the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The University of Calgary will be holding events throughout the day to highlight the impacts of residential schools, intergenerational trauma and Indigenous resilience. Events will start at 9 a.m. with an in-person flag lowering ceremony in front of the Rozsa Centre. Due to COVID-19 health and safety considerations, attendance for this in-person event will be limited to invited guests and media only. (All guests on campus must be able to show proof of full vaccination and be wearing a mask.)

 

WHAT:                 Flag ceremony followed by series of online events guided by our Indigenous Elders                                         and members of the Indigenous Engagement team for National Day for Truth                                                     and Reconciliation

WHEN:                September 30, 2021

Other Office of Indigenous Engagement events on Sept 30 include:

  • 12pm – 1:30pm - Indigenous Writers’ Panel: Literature on Intergenerational Trauma and Healing, hosted by UCalgary’s Office of Indigenous Engagement in partnership with the Calgary Public Library;
  • 6:30pm – 9:00pm - A film screening and discussion of Monkey Beach, hosted by UCalgary’s Office of Indigenous Engagement in partnership with the Calgary Public Library.

 

Both of these events will be held online to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

NOTE: The University of Calgary has decided to close operations on September 30 to honour survivors, their families and their communities. To pre-arrange interviews with guest speakers on or before September 30, please contact the Media and Issues Management team.
