UCalgary celebrates spring convocation with in-person ceremonies

6,000 graduands will take the stage in front of families, friends and colleagues for the first time since 2019

Calgary, AB – Spring 2022 convocation will mark a return to normal as nearly 1,400 graduate students and 4,700 undergraduates receive their degrees and designations in front of their families, friends and the campus community for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. While graduands were able to participate in the November ceremonies in-person, guests were not able to attend and instead joined us by live stream.

Starting with an afternoon ceremony at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 30, UCalgary will host eight ceremonies over five days at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium. The full schedule of ceremonies can be found on the convocation website.

This will be the last time Chancellor Deborah Yedlin will preside over the convocation ceremonies in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium as her four-year term concludes on June 30, 2022.

The University of Calgary will be conferring two honorary degrees (HD) and two Order of the University of Calgary (OTUC) designations this spring:

  • Journalist, author and political commentator Chantal St-Cyr Hébert will be conferred with an HD and give an address on May 31 during the 9:30 a.m. ceremony.
  • Eva Friesen, president and CEO of the Calgary Foundation will receive an HD and give an address on June 3 during the 9:30 a.m. ceremony.
  • An OTUC will be presented to Lana Wells, associate professor in the Faculty of Social Work and the Brenda Strafford Chair in the Prevention of Domestic Violence – an internationally recognized expert on domestic violence prevention – during the afternoon ceremony on June 1.
  • Dr. Vernon Jones, PhD, professor in the Haskayne School of Business with a long history of growing and developing the HSB, will be presented the OTUC on June 3 during the morning ceremony.

To find out more about our HD and OTUC recipients visit ucalgary.ca/convocation.

Despite the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions allowing the in-person event to take place once again, wearing a mask is strongly encouraged during convocation. Free masks and hand sanitizer will be available during the ceremonies.

For those unable to attend in person, a convocation live-stream will also be available.

*** For media, interviews can be arranged upon request with President Ed McCauley, Chancellor Deborah Yedlin or any of the honorary degree recipients. To arrange an interview, or to film or photograph the ceremonies, please contact the Media, Issues and Outreach team below.
