Transforming research into impact: e2i returns with new online learning content
Evolve to Innovate (e2i) returns this year with expanded learning options, including new online learning content alongside traditional in-person programming.
Delivered by the Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking, e2i is an experiential training program designed to support UCalgary postdocs, research associates, graduate students and faculty as they explore ways to mobilize their research and advance their ideas beyond academia.
Through dedicated funding, hands-on workshops and strategic mentorship, e2i empowers participants to take the next step in their research journey.
Mobilizing research into impact beyond academia
This is the second year the Hunter Hub has delivered the e2i program, which was previously supported by Innovate Calgary.
“The program is for the research community here at UCalgary interested in translating their research into impact beyond academia,” says Kurt White, MBA'23, social innovation specialist at the Hunter Hub and program lead for e2i.
“What makes this program so unique is the cohort itself. Participants are individuals who have been working on a particular innovation or research idea for years. This program is their opportunity to meet and network with like-minded individuals across all disciplines here at UCalgary.”
Last year’s cohort reflected this diversity, with participants from the Faculty of Arts, Haskayne School of Business, Faculty of Science and more.
e2i supports a wide range of aspirations. The program equips researchers with the tools and best practices they need to enhance their academic careers, pursue industry opportunities, explore commercialization through licensing, or even launch startups and not-for-profit ventures.
At the heart of e2i is the growth of the researcher — not just the project.
“Participants are individuals who have done significant research in their respective fields,” White says.
“From a talent standpoint, this program is a perfect example of taking the best and brightest at UCalgary and giving them the skills they need to create impact locally, provincially, nationally or beyond.
“We’re giving them the tool set to take what they’re doing here and bring it to the world.”
e2i offers three core micro-credentials
Unique to the program, participants have the chance to earn micro-credentials as they complete each core unit within the program:
- Unit 1: Communicating Beyond Academia
- Unit 2: Problem-Driven Innovations
- Unit 3: Innovation Beyond Academia
Upon completing each module, participants receive a cash award of up to $1,500, as generously provided by the Office of the Vice-President (Research). The micro credentials acknowledge the competencies gained throughout the program and can be highlighted on a CV or LinkedIn profile.
Asynchronous learning with online content
New this year, the program is also offering asynchronous learning modules that complement the in-person sessions held at the Hunter Hub. Developed by the Hunter Hub team, this online content allows participants to deepen their understanding of core concepts and engage with the material at their own pace.
