I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Steve Larter, PhD, as associate vice-president (research – innovation) (AVPR-I), effective Feb. 25, 2019. The AVPR-I plays a key role in driving innovation, a shared priority in the Eyes High Strategy 2017-22 and the 2018 Academic and Research Plans.

Dr. Larter’s extensive background in research,  innovation and entrepreneurship make him an excellent fit for this role. He will support commercialization, knowledge translation and innovation activities across University of Calgary campuses. The AVPR-I will work strategically with industry to promote collaborative projects, programs in the University Research Park, oversee the industry engagement program and work closely with Innovate Calgary.

Dr. Larter is a former Canada Research Chair and professor of geochemistry at the University of Calgary in the Department of Geosciences. His research has focused on organic and petroleum geochemistry and more recently on studies of the deep subsurface biosphere, where his work helped define microbial processes in oilfields and the base of the deep crustal biosphere.

Dr. Larter has been a co-founder of numerous technology startup companies, including Gushor Inc. (now part of Schlumberger), and is a chief scientist of the Creative Destruction Lab-Rockies. He currently advises several university-based student, postdoctoral, and faculty startups. He has also worked on transition technologies for zero-emission energy recovery, including direct hydrogen or electricity production from oil and gas fields and for capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide on a large scale.

Dr. Larter has worked in research and development in the oil and gas industry, as well as the universities of Oslo and Newcastle. A recipient of numerous academic and civil awards, Dr. Larter is a fellow of the Royal Society, a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and a foreign member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

The leadership brought by Dr. Larter will be essential as we continue to drive innovation in pursuit of our Eyes High vision. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Larter on his appointment.
