Slam Fest 2024
Calgary, AB – Together in partnership, the University of Calgary and the Calgary Surge are thrilled to announce the inaugural SLAM FEST, set to take place on June 15 at the WinSport Event Centre. This friendly competition promises to be a dynamic celebration of basketball, community spirit and the vibrant partnership between UCalgary and Surge.
The main attraction of SLAM FEST will be a friendly basketball competition that will highlight the skills and athleticism of players from both the Calgary Surge and the UCalgary Dinos, including current players and alumni. Attendees can look forward to a variety of skill competitions such as Dunk Contests, Dribbling Circuits and 3-Point Contests.
“SLAM FEST is an incredible event that gives us a chance to celebrate our newest partnership with the Calgary Surge. This collaboration isn't just about putting on a fantastic sports event; it's about showcasing athletes from the Surge and Dinos, and bringing the entire Calgary community together, including UCalgary students, alumni, and local residents."
Amanda Affonso, Associate Vice-President, Alumni, Community & Partnerships
SLAM FEST is a festival-style event designed to engage Calgarians, University of Calgary alumni families and members of the Calgary Surge. The event aims to unite the community through sport, offering a unique blend of athletic excellence and community celebration.
In addition to the basketball festivities, SLAM FEST will feature a variety of interactive activities designed to engage the whole family. From music and dance performances to interactive skill challenges and merchandise giveaways, there will be something for everyone to enjoy. This event is more than just a game – it's an opportunity to strengthen bonds with the local community and alumni while showcasing the talent and spirit of the Calgary Surge, a proud alumni co-owned organization.
"This one-of-a-kind event is incredibly special to the countless members of our organization who are proud to call ourselves University of Calgary alumni, current students, athletes, and donors."
Jason Ribeiro, Surge Vice-Chairman & President PhD’24
One of the core missions of Slam Fest is to give back to the community. $1.50 from each ticket will be donated to the UCalgary Student Food Security Fund. This initiative underscores the University of Calgary’s dedication to supporting its students and addressing food insecurity on campus. The fund provides essential resources to students in need, helping them to succeed academically and personally.
The event not only celebrates athletic prowess but also reinforces the importance of community, collaboration and giving back. This partnership is a powerful reminder of how sport can unite and inspire.
