Just one of many fundraising activities for the 2018 United Way campaign at the University of Calgary, the popular Give ‘n’ Thanks stars are now available through United Way representatives in your unit, faculty or department.

Stars sell for $2 each or three for $5, and 100 per cent of the proceeds go toward the United Way campaign.

Not only are the Give ‘n’ Thanks stars a great way to contribute to this year’s UCalgary fundraising goal of $575,000, they are also an opportunity to recognize, support and encourage your colleagues, employees and teammates across campus.

One of our shining stars

Last year, the Faculty of Social Work recognized the tireless leadership and support that Dean Jackie Sieppert gave, not only to his students, faculty and staff, but also to initiatives like the 2017 United Way campaign and the recently launched Indigenous Strategy.

“We decided to surprise him,” says Don McSwiney, the Faculty of Social Work’s communications and marketing manager.

“I suggested everyone in our faculty — from all of our campuses across the province — make a point of buying some stars for Jackie to show our collective appreciation. The results were amazing. Many people enthusiastically stepped up, and one day, when Jackie was at one of his many, many meetings, we hung literally hundreds of stars in his office and adjacent hallway, and covered his walls and bookshelves. I think this is what the Give ‘n’ Stars campaign is all about.”

Whether it’s one or 100 stars, your contribution makes a difference both on campus and in Calgary. The United Way of Calgary is committed to improving lives and creating a meaningful difference for our community. Learn more about the programs and initiatives your money supports.
