Reflecting on Freedom of Expression
Over the past week, the University of Calgary has seen several instances of free expression on our campus on a range of issues. These moments are an important reminder of the responsibility public universities have to uphold two principles that can, at times, be in tension: protecting freedom of expression and intellectual diversity, while also fostering a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for everyone.
As a university, we have a responsibility to permit lawful assembly and expression, including when the ideas being expressed are unwelcome, upsetting or objectionable to members of our community. Universities cannot become places where ideas are shielded from scrutiny. Engaging with challenging ideas and perspectives is fundamental to the role of a public university.
We encourage all members of our campus community to engage with one another through respectful and civil discourse, particularly when we encounter views that challenge or unsettle us. We have policies and processes in place to support this, and, in light of the events of the past week, we are reviewing them to ensure they continue to serve our community well.
Our responsibility is not to eliminate difficult conversations, but to create the conditions in which they can take place safely and respectfully. We will continue to listen, learn and take meaningful action to strengthen a campus community that protects and advances both freedom of expression and a sense of belonging and safety for all.
