Presidential search progress update October 2018

A message from Jill Wyatt, chair, Board of Governors

To the University of Calgary community:

As we enter into the final months of 2018, I am pleased to inform you that the work of the Presidential Search Committee (PSC) will soon be drawing to a close.

As a reminder, the PSC began its work in the spring following Dr. Elizabeth Cannon’s announcement that she would be moving on from her role as UCalgary’s president and vice-chancellor at the end of 2018. A position profile was developed after consultation with members of the university community, a nomination process was opened as part of a dedicated presidential search website, and the position was advertised broadly. The posting closed on July 31, after which the PSC short-listed and began — in strict confidence — a series of interviews with a group of high-calibre candidates.

This process is now nearly complete and we hope to be able to announce the results of the search process before the end of November.

As I have mentioned in past updates, should our final candidate not be available to take up the position immediately in January 2019, our presidential search and appointment policy does make provision for the appointment of an interim president.

Under the leadership of Dr. Cannon, the University of Calgary has made extraordinary progress. The 2018 Community Report, released in September, highlighted the most recent successes achieved across this institution. And although it is natural to feel some uncertainty during this process, the transition also offers us an opportunity to reflect on our future potential. A clear strategic direction, strong leadership team, accomplished faculty and staff, and great momentum provide a solid foundation for the successful onboarding of a new leader.

I hope that you take time to celebrate Dr. Cannon’s tremendous legacy between now and the end of the year. Watch for an invitation soon to an event on Dec. 3 that will provide an opportunity for the campus community to deliver best wishes to Dr. Cannon in person, and to mark the onset of the holiday season together.

As always, I will continue to provide updates via UToday and on the presidential search website.
