Presidential search progress update August 2018

A message from Jill Wyatt, chair, Board of Governors

To the University of Calgary community:

It is hard to believe that August is here already and we will soon be welcoming students, faculty and staff back to campus for a new academic year. The work of the Presidential Search Committee (PSC) continued through June and July and I am pleased to report that the search for UCalgary’s next president and vice-chancellor is progressing well.

The position posting closed on July 31 and the Search Committee then met to review the progress and next steps in the search process. We expect that interviews with short-listed candidates will begin in mid-September.

Overall, we are pleased with the quality and diversity of candidates generated by our international posting and search activities. This reinforces what members of the UCalgary community already know: that our university is a highly respected, dynamic and attractive institution with tremendous opportunity for the future.

As I shared with you in my last update, the candidates being interviewed for the position of president and vice-chancellor will not be named publicly and the members of the Presidential Search Committee will maintain strict confidentiality throughout the process.

While the presidential recruitment process is on schedule and progressing well, the presidential search and appointment policy makes provision for the timely appointment of an interim president, should the final candidate not be available to begin in January 2019.

I will provide a further update on the presidential recruitment process in mid-September when most of our community will be back on campus. In the meantime, we are developing comprehensive transition plans to celebrate the leadership legacy of Dr. Cannon while ensuring that our incoming president and vice-chancellor is set up for success in their new role.

I do hope you are enjoying this incredible Alberta summer.
