Congratulations to Cecilia Porter on her latest publication: “Overcoming the Digital Divide: Some lessons from the Arctic for consideration in BC” in the MIdden

We are so happy to have Cecilia back with us this year as a PhD student. She previously completed her MA in our department in 2017. Her PhD research will be working with Dr. Matthew Walls and Dr. Naotaka Hayashi with the Inughuit in Northwest Greenland. She is interested in how new media can be used to overcome barriers of remoteness and add Indigenous voices to the decisions that go into the policies that affect them and their heritage.

This article discusses Porter’s MA project which is a panoramic digital tour of the Arvia’juaq National Historic Site in Nunavut. Documenting heritage sites digitally makes it possible for both the public and indigenous groups (in this case the Arviamiut Inuit) to be able to access the information and site to teach and learn the history and pass on traditional knowledge of sites that are particularly difficult to physically access. Please take some time to check out the virtual tour here: www.arviajuaq.ca

Awesome work Cecilia!
