Our giving spirit shines as momentum builds

2018 UCalgary United Way campaign progress update

The UCalgary community has stepped up with exceptional energy over the past month to support the 2018 United Way Campaign. Through our giving, we are improving lives and mobilizing our community to create lasting social change in Calgary. Special events on campus such as Werklund School of Education’s 3rd annual 5km Walk/Run, the Provost’s Office book sale, several bake sales, and the popular Chillin’ for Charity event presented by the Haskayne School of Business have bolstered awareness and participation in faculties and units. These events, in combination with payroll donations and Give n’ Thanks stars contributions, have come together to help meet our institutional fundraising goal of $575,000.

The numbers so far

As we pass the halfway point of the campaign, more than $311,000 has been raised so far by UCalgary with the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning taking the lead in the Challenge Cup standings, followed by Haskayne School of Business and UCalgary International. The Challenge Cup is awarded annually to the faculty or unit with the highest combined faculty and staff participation, employee donations, and special event donations. As an added bonus, United Way’s Leadership Giving Program is enhancing contributions by matching your donation of $1,200+, dollar for dollar, doubling your impact to support Calgarians in need.

Get your colleagues together and make a commitment to support, or purchase some Give n’ Thanks stars to build your numbers and recognize your team. There is still over three weeks left to bump the top contributors from their standing!

Where do we need a boost?

While we’re excelling in special event and leadership donations, core donations ($1 to $1,200) have room to grow and make a huge difference as we reach the homestretch of the campaign. As little as $20 can make a direct impact in the community for more than 100 United Way supported agencies.

Real results in the community

United Way uses your dollars to address complex social issues within a connected system of community supports, so you can be sure that your funds go to use in the most thoughtful way. For example, Bryanna was only 16 years old when she moved out of her family home. She spent her days worrying about having enough money to buy food and pay rent. Thankfully, support was there to reduce her financial barriers and help her graduate. Those supports were funded by United Way donations. Hear her story in the video below.
