Dr. David Topps appointed Clinical Co-Director of the Office of Health and Medical Education Scholarship
The Cumming School of Medicine is pleased to announce that Dr. David Topps has been appointed Clinical Co-Director—Office of Health and Medical Education Scholarship (OHMES), effective 1stSeptember 2016.
The Office of Health and Medical Education Scholarship (OHMES) was established in 2013 to provide leadership and assistance in the pursuit of the scholarship of teaching and learning within the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM). OHMES does this through providing leadership in medical, health and science education scholarship, building scholarly capacity in the CSM through educational initiatives, events, and mentorship and promoting and disseminating scholarly work in medical, health and science education in, with, and for the CSM community.
Dr. Topps will have a particular focus on enhancing the quality and breadth of education at the CSM including initiatives focused on capacity building and engagement with all of the CSM’s faculty across Calgary and beyond.
Dr. Topps first worked at the University of Calgary as an assistant professor from 1997-2005. He then worked in various faculty positions at James Cook University, Lakehead University, Laurentian University and the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. In 2010 he rejoined the CSM as a professor in the Department of Family Medicine. He has broad and expansive research interests including virtual patients and simulation learning. He has also published peer-reviewed journal articles, authored and co-authored many book chapters and produced mixed media teaching tools such as videos and blogs.

Research and Innovation Funding Competition 2016-2017
The Office of Health and Medical Education Scholarship (OHMES) was created in 2013 to support and develop a culture of excellence in health and medical education scholarship at the University of Calgary. To that end, OHMES is pleased to announce the third annual Health Science and Medical Education Research and Innovation Funding Competition.
For this call we define two kinds of project submissions:
- Research projects: these are focused on knowledge generation through the use of scientific methods of various kinds, typically based around the exploration of a particular set of circumstances such as the impact of an intervention, the experiences of learners and teachers, or a recurring topic across a body of research literature.
- Innovation projects: these are focused on the application of knowledge (such as research findings and research syntheses) to guide changes in educational practice to improve, extend, or refocus them. Innovation projects should include knowledge synthesis, development, application, and evaluation stages.
OHMES has instituted a Letter of Intent process for this competition, in order to ensure that the proposed project has a direct link to medical education before proceeding to the full proposal stage. It is also anticipated that the LOI process will assist applicants in developing a full proposal.

AMEE Webinar: Discussion Storylines: A helpful framework for writing the most difficult section of your research paper
Presenter: Lorelei Lingard
Western university
Wednesday, May 18, 2016
10:00-11:00am
G646 Health Sciences Centre
There is no cost to attend. Please RSVP to ohmes@ucalgary.ca
Description:
The Discussion is arguably the most important section of the paper, and also the most difficult section to write. To be effective, your Discussion must avoid the common pitfalls of mere summary, meandering commentary and dramatic arm-waving. And of course your Discussion must follow standard conventions: summary of main findings, interpretation of their meaning in the context of existing knowledge, consideration of their implications for practice or theory, reflection on methodological limitations and suggestion of future directions. But just following these conventions will not ensure a powerful Discussion. Why not? Because your Discussion also needs to tell a good story. In this webinar, we will discuss strategies for organizing your discussion to tell a compelling and coherent story. Three common 'storylines' will be illustrated with examples from the medical education literature: "Coming full circle", "Deep exploration", and "Surprising insight". Participants will have the opportunity to discuss how to choose among these storylines and how to use them to shape the story 'arc' that must grow between a paper's Introduction and Discussion sections. This webinar is intended for writers at introductory and intermediate levels of experience writing for publication.

AMEE Webinar: How effective are selection methods in the healthcare professions?
Presenter: Fiona Patterson
University of Cambridge
Wednesday, May 4, 2016
8:00-9:00am
G748 Health Sciences Centre
There is no cost to attend. Please RSVP to ohmes@ucalgary.ca
Description:
Across the globe, selection and admissions processes continue to attract strong public interest, and often criticism regarding accuracy, fairness and widening participation. Whilst academic achievement is consistently a good predictor of subsequent performance, it cannot be assumed that those with high academic ability alone can be trained to become competent clinicians. Little research attention has focused on methods that reliably evaluate important (non-academic) personal attributes, values and motivational qualities. In this webinar, in exploring these issues, results of a new systematic literature review are presented to examine the quality of evidence for various selection methods. Implications for both policy and practice are discussed.
