In Memoriam: Victor Sawchuk, Cumming School of Medicine

The Cumming School of Medicine is saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Victor Sawchuk, MD. Sawchuk, who lived a life dedicated to rural medicine, passed away on March. 9. He was 88.

Sawchuk joined the Division of Family Practice in the Faculty of Medicine (now the Cumming School of Medicine) at the University of Calgary in 1974. He was promoted to associate professor in 1978 where he remained until leaving the faculty in 1996.

While at the medical school he served on numerous committees, including the search for a new Dean and the admissions committee. He had a lifelong interest in rural medicine, teaching residents in clinics at the Stoney Health Centre and Siksika Health Services.

Sawchuk continued to practice rural medicine, working with medical students and residents, until his retirement in 2017.
