S. Terence 'Terry' Myles

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is mourning the loss of pediatric neuroscientist and professor emeritus Dr. Terry Myles, MD. He was 82.

Myles was a neurosurgeon and educator at the Foothills Medical Centre and Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) until retiring in 2012. He was chief of staff, Surgical, at the ACH from 1985 to 1993 and taught at the medical school for 39 years. He passed away on Sept. 11.

He was recruited to the University of Calgary initially as an assistant professor in 1981 and went on to lead the neurosurgery residency program for many years. The CSM’s Department of Clinical Neurosciences Dr. Terrence S. Myles Award, also known as the Terry Myles Teaching Excellence Award, is given to a senior neurosurgical resident each year for exemplary service in teaching and mentoring of junior residents. He was inspired to create the award after witnessing the value and pride from the recognition during a sabbatical in Scotland.

Prior to moving to Calgary, Myles graduated medical school from the University of Alberta and his postgraduate training took place at McGill University’s Montreal Neurological Institute (known today as The Neuro).

In 1978, he was inducted into Kainai Chieftainship as an Honourary Chief of the Blood Nation of the Blackfoot Confederacy. He was given the name Curlew. A few years earlier, Myles helped save the life of the traditional Head Chief by removing a blood clot from near his brain during emergency surgery.

Memorial tributes in Terry Myles’ name may be made directly to the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. A Celebration of Life will take place Sept. 27 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Glencoe Club, 636 29 Ave. S.W.
