In Memoriam: John Timothy Goddard, Werklund School of Education
The Werklund School of Education is mourning the loss of Professor Emeritus John Timothy Goddard, who passed away Jan. 22.
Dr. Goddard, PhD, began his teaching career in England in 1974 and dedicated his life to educational leadership and to the education of those in need, particularly those in areas where the ravages of war denied children and adults an education.
He worked across the globe, engaging in emancipatory education initiatives and research with post-conflict, minority culture and Indigenous populations in Afghanistan, Canada, Kosovo, Lebanon, Papua New Guinea, and Slovenia.
During his time at the University of Calgary, he held posts as vice-provost (international); associate dean (research and international); and international projects co-ordinator. In addition, he served in academic and administrative positions at St. Francis Xavier University, the University of Prince Edward Island, and Yorkville University in New Brunswick.
No matter the leadership role he assumed, Tim always dedicated himself to his students.
His community service was extensive. Notably, he served as president and chair of the Board of Directors for the Nichola Goddard Fund. Named for his daughter, the foundation provides funding to community programs that support servicewomen, veteran women and their families.
He was also the founding honorary chair of Adopt Afghanistan. This initiative worked to improve education and health care for the people of Afghanistan, with a special emphasis on the children.
Known for his wonderful sense of humour and his love of “real football,” Tim was an accomplished photographer and novelist, publishing several books featuring Gavin Rashford of the North West Mounted Police.
