Honorary Degree and Order of the University of Calgary recipients announced for fall convocation

Public health pioneer, community leader, business executive, and economics professor among the recipients

On behalf of Chancellor Robert Thirsk and President and Vice-Chancellor Elizabeth Cannon, we are pleased to announce the Honorary Degree recipients and Order of the University of Calgary inductees for the fall 2017 convocation ceremonies: 

Friday, Nov. 10, 9:30 a.m.

  • Honorary Degree recipient: David Naylor. David Naylor is a professor of medicine and President Emeritus at the University of Toronto. He is also a Rhodes Scholar and recently chaired Canada's Fundamental Science Review. He is the author or co-author of more than 300 scholarly publications spanning social history, public policy, epidemiology, biostatistics and health economics, as well as clinical and health services research in most fields of medicine. Among other honours, Naylor is an Officer of the Order of Canada. His achievements in medicine, education, health care and innovation are an inspiration for all graduating students.
  • Order of the University of Calgary recipient: Jill Tynan. Jill Tynan’s passion for education led to a 25-year career as a teacher in Calgary. She has been an accomplished coach and mentor. Following her retirement from the Calgary Board of Education, Tynan accepted a role with the United Way of Calgary and Area to create opportunities for community leaders to support and help solve social needs. In 2010, the Government of Alberta appointed Tynan to be a representative on the University of Calgary Senate. She is a proud UCalgary alumna, and one of the university’s most passionate advocates. 

 Friday, Nov. 10, 2 p.m.

  • Honorary Degree recipient: Bonnie DuPont. Bonnie DuPont is an experienced senior executive and has served on many boards, including as Chair of the Board of Governors at the University of Calgary. She has also served on numerous not-for-profit boards. Among her many honours, she was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women each year from 2003 to 2006 and was inducted into the Top 100 Hall of Fame in 2007. DuPont is an inspiring example of an accomplished senior executive whose dedication to business and community will continue to motivate future graduates to achieve their best.
  • Order of the University of Calgary recipient: Robert Mansell. Robert Mansell is a UCalgary economics professor and dedicated leader.  His thoughtful analysis of the impact of policy on the economy has advanced the reputation of the economics profession and the reputation of the University of Calgary, notably his leadership in the construction of the Energy Environment Experiential Learning (EEEL) building. His passion for public policy led him to author more than 100 studies on resource sector and public utility issues and on regional and national fiscal policy issues. His demonstrated leadership skills on our campus and beyond have made him a model and mentor for all students.

The University of Calgary’s fall convocation ceremonies will take place on Friday, Nov. 10 in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium in the Kinesiology Complex. Both the morning and afternoon ceremonies are open to the public.
