The Government of Alberta has appointed Gordon Ritchie as chair of the Board of Governors, University of Calgary for a one-year term. Ritchie has been a member of the board since September 2013, served as vice-chair, and has been acting chair since July 9, 2016.  He retired this year after a distinguished career at RBC Capital Markets, where he was vice-chairman for the last 11 years.

"It's important to maintain strong, stable governance at the University of Calgary," said Marlin Schmidt, minister of Advanced Education. "Mr. Ritchie has provided thoughtful leadership for the university and I look forward to our continued work together."

"I am honoured to contribute to our community as chair of one of this province’s great institutions," said Ritchie. "Under the leadership of President Elizabeth Cannon, the University of Calgary is taking its place nationally and internationally as a top university for teaching and learning, research and scholarship, and innovation and engagement. I am confident that over the next year, the university will continue its dynamic trajectory of growth and success."

"We are very fortunate to have Gordon Ritchie as chair of our board," said President Elizabeth Cannon. "He brings tremendous commitment, expertise, and sound governance oversight to the university. I look forward to working with him and our full board over the coming year."
