Finance students visit Haskayne alumni working in New York City
A group of eight Haskayne School of Business students, along with accompanying faculty Larry Wood and Vern Jones, recently participated in the first Finance Day of Discovery. The group travelled to New York City to visit Haskayne alumni who have made a name for themselves among the city’s elite in the finance sector and developed an appreciation for the value of a Haskayne degree and its ability to open doors worldwide.
Logan Heidt, fourth-year Bachelor of Commerce student, says the trip was an incredible opportunity. “The trip gave me a chance to meet a group of really intelligent individuals, at top tier organizations like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and self-started companies, who have a ton of real-world experience in the field of finance.”
Mira Jackson, Master of Business Administration student, agrees with Heidt and believes the experience has given her more insight on where she wants to take her career. “I feel that this experience has really guided me onto a path I would like to pursue after graduating from the MBA program. It showed me how I can combine the skills I have learned in the work force with the skills from the program.”
During the three-day trip, students were given the opportunity to meet with nine exceptional Haskayne alumni who generously took the time out of their days to encourage and inspire the students. The meetings ranged from casual lunches and Q&A sessions to a New York Stock Exchange tour.
“Our alumni have done very well and are extremely successful,” says Wood, senior finance instructor. “It was exciting to watch the students interact with these people and see proof that a Haskayne BComm degree or MBA truly can open doors and lead to great careers.
“All of the alumni we met spoke very highly of their Haskayne experience and degrees.”
“I made some great contacts on the trip and learned how I can possibly make it to New York City one day, and then make it ‘in’ New York City,” continues Heidt. “The most important thing I learned on the trip was not what I was told, but the traits I observed in every individual. Every person I met was very hard-working, passionate about what they did, and no matter what they did, did it to the best of their ability, which led to all of their success.
“Overall, it was a life-changing trip that really solidified my interest in pursuing opportunities in New York City.”
