What will fall of 2020 look like for students at the University of Calgary? Courses will be offered in a variety of formats including fully face-to-face, fully online and blended (a mix of face-to-face and online components). The Fall 2020 schedule of classes is being finalized this week and will be available in your Student Centre by Friday, June 26. We look forward to welcoming you, whether you’re joining us for the first time or returning to university to continue your education.

Our faculties have been hard at work preparing teaching plans that balance public health guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to protect the health and safety of every member of our community, and our commitment to providing rich, world-class learning experiences and a sharp focus on world-changing research and scholarship.

Course components such as lectures, labs, and tutorials will be provided through a combination of face-to-face and online learning. Students can review their course registration information and the mode of instruction for each course in their Student Centre. If a student wishes to make changes to their schedule, they can do so up to the ‘add/drop/swap’ deadline outlined in the Academic Schedule.

The following guidelines were followed closely as our faculties considered how the courses would be delivered:

  • Safety and well-being of our campus community
  • Meaningful, high-quality, student-centered learning experiences
  • Integrity, standards, fairness
  • Equity and accessibility
  • Minimize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on students’ ability to progress through their degree, without making changes to the dates and times of the Fall 2020 schedule

Additionally, we worked to ensure, where possible, that we are not introducing a face-to-face component of a required course necessary for degree progression if other components are online. This is to support students who are not based in Calgary or could not attend in-person classes due to family, health-related or other reasons. These were important considerations to support equity in learning opportunities and progression for all our students.

Here’s a by-the-numbers overview of fall classes:

  • About 23 per cent of graduate courses will have a face to face component
  • About 14 per cent of undergraduate courses will have a face to face component
  • No more than 30 per cent of our students are scheduled to be on campus on any given day.
