Dr. Sarah Childs appointed Department Head, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Dr. Childs appointment to take effect July 1, 2019

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Sarah Childs, PhD, as department head, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The appointment will take effect on July 1, 2019.

Sarah takes over from Dr. Jonathan Lytton, PhD, who held the position for the past 10 years. Sarah is a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and her current research focus is angiogenesis, or blood vessel development. Her lab has four different research projects underway studying the genetics of blood vessel development and disease, such as stroke, arteriovenous (abnormally formed) or vascular (a birthmark or growth) malformations.

Sarah has been a Canada Research Chair in Genetics and Angiogenesis and a past recipient of the Young Innovator Award at the University of Calgary. She most recently acted as a graduate program director within the Faculty of Graduate Studies, mentoring eight graduate students in her lab over the past six years.

Sarah trained at the Ontario Cancer Institute and B.C. Cancer Research Centre before undertaking postdoctoral work at the Cardiovascular Research Centre at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard University. She is a member of the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute and an associate member of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute and the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute.
