Dr. Antonia Stang appointed head of Department of Paediatrics

Alberta Health Services (AHS) and the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Antonia Stang, MD, as the academic and clinical head of the Department of Pediatrics, effective May 1, 2022.

Antonia takes over from Dr. Michael Leaker, MD, who has been serving as interim head since Oct. 2021. He returns to his role as deputy head, Clinical and Strategic Affairs for the department. A special thank you to Michael for his leadership over the last several months.

Antonia completed her medical degree and pediatric residency at McGill University and holds Masters degrees in Business Administration and Clinical Epidemiology from the same institution. In 2008, she joined AHS and the University of Calgary, where she now holds an associate professorship in the departments of Pediatrics, Community Health Sciences, and Emergency Medicine.  Antonia held the position of Assistant Dean, Physician Learning Program, CME and Professional Development from 2017 to 2018 when she assumed the role of Section Chief, Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

As a pediatric emergency physician and child health and wellness researcher, Antonia is focused on improving outcomes for acutely ill and injured children.  She has been involved in a range of research in areas including pain management, head injury and mental health. Her research interests also include pediatric health services as she aims to improve emergency department safety, wait times and efficiency.   She has earned numerous awards for her work in innovation and quality improvement.
