Dr. André Buret appointed interim vice-president (research)
With the selection of Dr. Ed McCauley, vice-president (research), as the new president and vice-chancellor of the University of Calgary as of Jan. 1, 2019, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. André Buret as interim vice-president (research), effective the same date. The vice-president (research) is the principal leader in driving innovation, research and discovery at the university, fulfilling the priorities outlined in the Eyes High Strategy and the Academic and Research Plans.
An internationally renowned academic, Dr. Buret is currently associate vice-president (research) at UCalgary, as well as a tenured professor in the Faculty of Science (Biological Sciences) and adjunct professor in the Cumming School of Medicine (Physiology and Pharmacology).
Dr. Buret’s research has been funded by more than 70 grants from numerous organizations, including the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). He has held a Killam Professorship, and was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, as well as a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association. Dr. Buret is also the co-founder of the Inflammation Research Network of Canada, a scientific advisory board member of Antibe Therapeutics, and a director of Host-Parasite Interactions with the NSERC-CREATE program.
Dr. Buret is an active UCalgary community member who has a talent for communicating the importance of science, research and innovation, and in 2013, he was inducted into the Order of the University of Calgary.
Dr. Buret holds a teaching diploma from École Normale Cantonale de Neuchâtel, as well as a Licence es Sciences (Biology) from the Université de Neuchâtel, both in Switzerland. He received a master of science degree in Parasitology, as well as a PhD in Pathophysiology of Infectious Diseases from UCalgary. In addition, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow in mucosal immunology at the University of Newcastle in Australia, as well as a postdoctoral fellow in gastrointestinal physiology at UCalgary.
Dr. McCauley will launch the search for the next vice-president (research) in 2019, including the development of an advisory search committee.
