Celebrating Dr. Melanie Rock
After more than two decades at the University of Calgary, Dr. Melanie Rock is retiring from her academic career, leaving a lasting impact on research, education and interdisciplinary collaboration for public health.
A professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences, Dr. Rock has built a distinguished career spanning public health, medical anthropology, social work and veterinary medicine. Throughout her career, she championed the value of bringing diverse perspectives together to better understand and address complex health challenges.
Dr. Rock has been a member of the O'Brien Institute for Public Health since 2009 and served in several leadership roles, including director of the Population Health Intervention Research Centre, co-director of the Population Health and Inequities Research Centre and associate scientific director from 2016 to 2018. In these roles, she helped shape the Institute's strategic direction and fostered connections across disciplines, faculties and communities.
As Associate Scientific Director, Dr. Rock brought thoughtful leadership, intellectual curiosity and a deep commitment to equity and inclusion. She was a strong advocate for qualitative and community-engaged research and helped ensure that social science perspectives were represented alongside biomedical and clinical approaches. Her ability to bridge disciplines strengthened the Institute and enriched conversations about research and practice in public health.
Beyond her leadership contributions, Dr. Rock's research advanced understanding of the social, cultural and environmental factors that shape health. Her work frequently challenged conventional boundaries between disciplines and explored innovative approaches to improving health and well-being in communities.
Dr. Rock has also been a dedicated educator and mentor, supporting students, trainees and colleagues throughout her career. Her guidance, generosity and commitment to fostering the next generation of scholars have had a lasting influence on many members of our community.
