For many students, working while studying is a great way to gain valuable professional experience. These students also bring new energy and skills to local industry. Now, the University of Calgary is getting extra serious about connecting as many employers as possible to students — by allowing them to post on the university’s official student job board for free.

As of Jan. 1, 2018, University of Calgary Career Services will no longer be charging a fee for job postings on the CareerLink job board. This means more job opportunities for students and recent graduates — and an even stronger connection between the university and local industries.

"Eliminating the fee removes a really significant barrier for both employers and students," says Nora Molina, manager, Career Services. "Through our daily work with students, my team and I get to see first-hand the life-changing difference job opportunities can make. And we also hear back from our employer partners that these students bring real value to their companies. We’re excited by the chance to see even more students and employers connecting in 2018 thanks to this change."

Removing the fee will simplify job posting for employers. "Until now, we've had inconsistent practices on campus where some faculty job boards have been free, but some had a fee,” says Molina. "This change will make things very simple: job postings with all faculties at UCalgary are now free."

It's hoped the removal of job posting fees will create even more job opportunities for UCalgary students.

This change is also another way for the university to contribute to the region’s recovering economy. "Of course, this will cut recruiting costs for companies," says Molina, "but I think the greater value will be the positive impact student employees have on companies that would not have posted because of the fee."

Working to increase job opportunities for students is an important part of UCalgary's Eyes High strategy, specifically its commitments to enrich the quality and breadth of learning and to integrate the university with the community.

"Our goal is to provide students with the best university experience possible," says Susan Barker, vice-provost (student experience), "and that includes opportunities to grow their skills and confidence outside the classroom. Local employers are an important partner for us in making this happen."
