Canadian Society for Civil Engineering honours Schulich professors

Janaka Ruwanpura, professor and vice-provost – international at the University of Calgary, was inducted by The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering as a fellow.

Faculty from the Schulich School of Engineering were recognized at The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) annual conference held in Halifax May 28-31. Three professors from the Department of Civil Engineering received awards and recognition.

Professor Emeritus Tom Brown received the A.B Sanderson Award for outstanding contributions to the development and practice of structural engineering in Canada, recognizing career achievements. 

Janaka Ruwanpura, professor and vice-provost – international at the University of Calgary, was inducted as fellow in recognition of having attained civil engineering excellence and active contributions to the profession.

Associate Professor Raafat El-Hacha was awarded Casimir Gzowski Medal for the best civil engineering paper in surveying, structural engineering or heavy construction. El-Hacha’s paper, co-written by Khaled Soudki, “Prestressed near-surface mounted fibre reinforced polymer reinforcement for concrete structures – a review” was published in the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering. Volume 40.

Fellowship recipient Ruwanpura is proud of the civil engineering department’s accomplishments. “I was very pleased that three professors from our department were recognized with awards and recognitions in all three categories – fellowships, best papers and career awards.”

According to the recent QS world rankings, Schulich’s civil engineering program is rated among the top five in the country.

“These recognitions show that the reputation of our department is recognized by our peers in Canada,” says Ruwanpura.
