Canadian athletes have spectacular finish at the Beijing 2022 Games
Despite a worldwide pandemic, the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games were spectacular. Canada raked in 26 medals — its second-highest tally since the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games (with 29 medals).
Moreover, the Games proved to be an exciting highlight for the University of Calgary and the Faculty of Kinesiology. Four speed skating athletes who train at the Olympic Oval produced five Olympic medals;
1. Gold for Isabelle Weidemann, Valérie Maltais and Ivanie Blondin in the Women’s Team Pursuit
2. Silver for Isabelle Weidemann in the Women’s 5,000m
3. Silver for Ivanie Blondin in the Women’s Mass Start
4. Silver for Laurent Dubreuil in the Men’s 1,000m
5. Bronze for Isabelle Weidemann in the Women’s 3,000m
Long track and short track speed skating produced a combined nine Olympic medals in Beijing — tying with the medal tally back in 2006 at the Torino Olympic Winter Games.
It’s a fantastic result. The Olympic Oval now boasts an impressive 26 Olympians with a combined 36 Olympic medals since its opening back in 1987. These Olympians will be added to the Olympic Oval’s Hall of Champions after retiring from the sport*. Very few high-performance facilities in the world can lay claim to this achievement — further solidifying the Olympic Oval as Canada’s Medal Factory.
*Athletes who train at the Olympic Oval for over one-year qualify for this distinction.
