U of C inducts new students into the ‘Community of Scholars’

August 30, 2007

Students will take the pledge of higher learning as part of a new induction ceremony at the U of C.

This fall, the University of Calgary will introduce a new student induction ceremony as part of a week of activities designed to welcome all incoming undergraduate students.

The new induction ceremony, similar in flavour to more traditional convocations, is part of U of C 101, which will involve more than 5,000 students.

“For our first-year students, U of C 101 marks the beginning of their University of Calgary journey,” said Ann Tierney, U of C’s vice-provost (students). “This new ceremony will symbolically welcome students to the U of C and mark this significant step in their lives. We hope to instill a sense of pride and excitement as these students move forward in their academic career.”

The U of C 101 orientation program has been a tradition for 11 years. This year, two, two-day sessions introduce new students to the many services on campus, and also offer them an opportunity to interact with faculty members, student leaders and classmates.

Other highlights of U of C 101 include:
SEXXXY – a high energy and entertaining dramatic performance that touches on sensitive issues that all students should be aware of, including sexually transmitted infections, binge drinking and sexual harassment
Student success workshops – includes academic tips, an orientation to U of C technologies and showcases volunteer opportunities
Dino Walk – a campus tour, offered Tuesday, Sept. 4: 2:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 7: 1 p.m.-2 p.m.

Media are invited to the Induction Ceremony, as well as other U of C 101 events, as prearranged.

Welcome from President – Dr. Harvey Weingarten
Welcome from Provost – Dr. Alan Harrison
Invocation by native elder - Leonard Bastien
New Student Pledge by Chancellor – Joanne Cuthbertson
