It’s graduation time at University of Calgary Continuing Education. This Thursday evening, 530 adult learners, from 31 programs of study, will receive certificates that they have earned primarily through evening, weekend, and online study.

“Our students come to us from a wide range of backgrounds,” says Judith Russell, University of Calgary Continuing Education registrar. “And while their professional development goals differ, they all share a real commitment to learning. Most of them have fit their courses around very busy lives. I congratulate them all on their perseverance and achievements.”

Earning a certificate from Continuing Education can be challenging. Most adult students work full-time—and often, in demanding careers. They juggle courses with their jobs, families, and community responsibilities in pursuit of a certificate that can build on their past education and work experience. Most of them already have diplomas or degrees from University of Calgary or other post secondary institutions. What they seek from Continuing Education is career-specific learning that can help them advance professionally, or make transitions into new fields.

Dr. Scott McLean, Director of Continuing Education, Chancellor Jim Dinning, and Dr. Sandy Murphree, Deputy Provost, will present the certificates.

Several scholarships will be awarded during the ceremony, including five Kay A. Pringle Memorial Scholarships, one Human Resources Institute of Alberta Award, two scholarships from the Health and Safety Conference Society of Alberta, two Continuing Education Awards for Exceptional Performance and two Thomas Brown and Linda Harvey Scholarships.

University of Calgary Continuing Education serves over 20,000 learners annually. Students are taught by nearly 500 expert instructors who deliver over 1,200 Continuing Education courses each year.
