Day-long symposium to explore how environmental design contributes to personal health in Calgary

April 11, 2014

How buildings, parks and schools are designed can play a vital role in what keep citizens healthy and what could potentially make people sick.

On Friday, experts from across North America will gather at the University of Calgary's downtown campus for a day-long symposium makeCalgary: Healthy - Shaping our Cities, Shaping Ourselves.

Among the speakers will be bestselling writer David Owen, author of Green Metropolis: Why Living Smaller, Living Closer, and Driving Less Are the Keys to Sustainability.

The University of Calgary's Joseph Arvai, who holds the Svare Chair in Applied Decision Research and recently penned the thought-provoking Globe and Mail opinion piece Will Calgary be the Next Detroit?, will also debate the future of urban planning with Rollin Stanley, City of Calgary General Manager of Planning, Development, and Assessment.

makeCalgary: Healthy is part of an ongoing collaboration between the University of Calgary and City of Calgary to encourage leading-edge researchers and front-line City planners to work together to tackle problems important to Calgarians.

This symposium is being presented in partnership with the University of Calgary's Faculty of Environmental Design and Institute for Public Health, The City of Calgary, the Urban Alliance, and Alberta Health Services.
