2017 Blackstone Medals Debate

The Faculty of Law hosted the annual Blackstone Medals Debate on March 29, with the winning team of Dan Shapiro and Trent Blanchette.

The Faculty of Law hosted the annual Blackstone Medals Debate on March 29, which featured two teams facing off on the topic of, “be it resolved that mandatory minimum sentences be abolished.”

The students arguing in the affirmative were Trent Blanchette and Dan Shapiro, while Jesse Baker and Mihai Beschea argued in the negative.  The winning team was Trent and Dan, and Dan Shapiro is the winner of the trophy cup for the Most Outstanding Speaker of the Law School Annual Debating Competition donated by Richard N. Billington and Geoffrey D. Baker. 

The Faculty of Law would like to thank the judges, Rick Billington QC, Susan Billington QC, and Professor Alastair Lucas QC. 

Tema Blackstone, daughter of Mrs. Clara Blackstone, arrived from New York City and attended the final debate, awards presentations and reception. 

The Blackstone Medals Debate is part of the Faculty of Law’s mooting and debating program.
