Activities

Inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract are associated with a variety of symptoms including pain, diarrhea, and malabsorption among others.  Mucosal healing is considered the gold standard for efficacy of treatment.  We are investigating various aspects of mucosal healing, concentrating on the role of the epithelium in the resolution of the intestinal inflammatory response.  Our specific interest is in proteases and their products in driving epithelial cell migration.  We are assessing role of activation of protease-activated receptor (PAR) 2, as well as novel bioactive peptides that are produced by proteases in the inflammatory milieu.  Other projects are looking at how certain dietary fibres may play a role in mucosal healing during inflammation, such as that which characterizes the inflammatory bowel diseases, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.  Dr. MacNaughton is also involved in developing new organoid-based systems to study intestinal disease.  He is co-director of the Human Organoid Innovation Hub in the Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases.

Please note that Dr. MacNaughton is no longer accepting new trainees.
