Research

Activities

My lab is interested in exploring the role of environmental factors in shaping intestinal immunity and susceptibility to IBD.  We have generated an intestinal epithelium-specific knockout of a retinoic acid receptor (RARa), and have shown these mice to harbor significant alterations in intestinal immune function and are presently exploring mechanisms via which RARa helps to shape intestinal homeostasis in an effort to understand how dietary factors contribute to immune regulation in the intestine.

Biography

I am a gastroenterologist with a research interest in intestinal inflammation and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). I am involved in a number of clinical trials looking at the effects of altering the intestinal microbiota on various intestinal and non-intestinal diseases.  I am part of the High Risk IBD clinic, an initiative to expedite diagnosis and treatment of patients with symptoms suggestive of inflammatory bowel disease and also co-director of the Intestinal Inflammation Tissue Bank, a repository of biological samples and linked clinical database for clinical and basic research purposes.
