Activities

Research Interests
To understand the relationship between parasite infections and lower incidence of inflammation by studying the energy requirements of immune system cells during inflammation.

Current Research
To explore the role of helminth components in modulating the immunometabolism of immune cells to promote inflammation resolution in inflammatory conditions.

  • Helmith modulation of bioenergetics of myeloid cells
  • Metabolic kinetics of neutrophils during inflammatory responses

Biography

Dr. Fernando Lopes received his PhD in Cell Biology from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil under Dr. Vanessa Pinho researching the role of neutrophil-derived reactive oxygen species in the resolution of inflammation using a model of rheumatoid arthritis. While completing his postdoctoral training at the University of Calgary under the supervision of Dr. Derek McKay, he specialized in helminth-host immunological crosstalk in chronic inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases and arthritis. As a new assistant professor in the Institute of Parasitology, he explores the role of helminth components in modulating the immunometabolism of immune cells to promote inflammation resolution in inflammatory diseases. Dr. Lopes also focuses on characterizing the metabolic requirements of myeloid cells during transmigration to inflammatory loci.
